On our nation’s highways, keeping traffic flowing is never a small concern. In some cases, such as in the days and weeks following a natural disaster, the reliable flow of traffic can be a matter of life and death. That’s why the speed of URETEK Deep Injection® (UDI) makes such a big difference to state and federal highway officials focused on the best use of tight pavement preservation budgets.
But how exactly does UDI accomplish so much so quickly?
The first answer has to do with what UDI does not involve: excavation. When standard “rip and replace” highway jobs are replaced with UDI, there is an immediate time savings that can shave weeks off the total number of days traffic is impacted by the work. Our crews arrive almost immediately, and usually complete work at night to avoid high-volume traffic. With URETEK, there are no heavy equipment expenses or slipped project timelines. Any traffic diversions are brief, and usually only involve one lane.
URETEK 486 Star® Polymer
A key factor in the short turnaround time for UDI repair is related to the nature of the high-density polyurethane foam (HDPF) used by URETEK. Our URETEK 486 Star® polymer is a two-component, high-density, expanding thermoset polyurethane system that reaches 90% of its total yield in just 15 minutes. Within an hour, our material is fully cured, and our lasting highway maintenance or repair solution is permanently in place.
URETEK developed its polymer to be the ideal solution for under-sealing, void filling, lifting of settled pavement, stabilization and stiffening of weak soils, and for encapsulating and sealing buried infrastructure. URETEK 486 Star® is environmentally inert, non-toxic, and resists underground water erosion or weakening due to its industry-leading hydrophobic properties.
But most of all, our polymer puts the speed in pavement preservation activities.
Federal Highway Administration Guidelines
According to the Federal Highway Administration, maintenance is defined as work performed to maintain the condition of the transportation system or to respond to specific conditions or events that restore the highway system to a functional state of operation.
For state DOT administrators, this means that preservation work with UDI is eligible and encouraged under the National Highway Performance Program, as well as the Surface Transportation Program.
Nowhere in the guidelines, however, does it state that highway maintenance activities must stretch on for weeks at a time.
URETEK crews understand that one of the biggest differentiators between UDI and traditional “rip & replace” techniques is the amount of time and traffic disruption involved in the job. For that reason, our crews take great pride in completing their work in a manner that provides the least disruption to the driving public. It is very common to find URETEK crews conducting UDI activities during overnight shifts or on weekends.
