Sustainable Solution for St. Landry Parish Airport


Location - St. Landry Parish Airport, Opelousas, Louisiana

URETEK USA was contacted by an engineering firm in Opelousas, LA in March of 2011 when the project was in the planning phase. The project engineer was curious about the URETEK DEEP INJECTION (UDI) Process and wanted to find out if it would be a possible solution for the stabilization and lifting of a faulted longitudinal joint located on taxiway A. The joint seal was deteriorated allowing water to infiltrate and weaken the support soils which caused differential settlement at the joint up to 1.5″ over approximately 38 slabs – total of 475′. Concerned about the potential for damage to small aircraft and the inconvenience to their clients; the airport project engineer took notice of the features and benefits of the UDI process.

The longitudinal joint being repaired had not been properly sealed for a very long time leaving the support soils vulnerable to the wet weather conditions in south Louisiana. In addition, there was a very wet sub-base composed of sandy clay. The sub-base support soils had to be stabilized properly in order to provide a long-term repair rather than just a temporary fix.
The URETEK crew successfully stabilized the soil and matched the 475′ of longitudinal joints and then stabilized the additional 75 panels. The entire project of 113 panels was completed in just 7 days.
After discussing the problem with the URETEK Engineering Group, the URETEK Project Manager proposed using UDI to make the repairs. The airport project engineer specified UDI an alternative to panel replacement. Forby Contracting won the bid and URETEK USA was subcontracted to make the repairs.
Since the prime contractor planned to reseal the joint, and the airport was operating at limited capacity during the project, it was key that URETEK complete the repairs as quickly as possible. The original proposed time for this project was 5 days. URETEK completed all 38 panels in 3 days using half the estimated quantity. Pleased with the UDI process and results, the airport engineer decided to use the remaining quantity to perform preventative maintenance by stabilizing 75 additional panels. The URETEK crew performed the stabilization work in just 4 additional days.

Results

URETEK was able to stabilize the sub-base, limit material infiltration into the drainable base, lift the panels to grade, and significantly extend the service life of the taxiway. The URETEK crew successfully stabilized the soil and matched the 475′ of longitudinal joints and then stabilized the additional 75 panels. The entire project of 113 panels was completed in just 7 days.
