Infrastructure Report Card
I don’t know about you, receiving a D in school was the result of obvious neglect on my part. I could think of every excuse imaginable but in the end, I was personally responsible for my grades. When I first read the statement from the ASCE referring to their annual report card for our nation’s infrastructure receiving a D I was disturbed but understood that our ambition and progress in our country would eventually result in some maintenance nightmares. When you receive a D two years in a row, that is the beginning of a problematic track record. America’s infrastructure should not fall under the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” column primarily because when it does break, lives are lost, and that is unacceptable given the technology and resources that are available to the United States. Since we have had several wake up calls in the recent past, we are forced to act quickly and decisively on shoring up our nation’s infrastructure.
For the past decade, URETEK has sharpened every facet of their technology to meet the demands of today’s aged and weakened underground infrastructure. URETEK started with the development of a patented, structural grade polymer that is a powerful, moisture resistive, eco-friendly, expanding material specifically developed for underground infrastructure applications to seal leaky manholes, pipe joints, and stabilize erosion in and around compromised infrastructure. After URETEK’s material was tested thoroughly, it has been put to the test throughout the United States for the past decade with outstanding success. URETEK’s infrastructure repair process is installed by professionally trained URETEK operators, equipped with the latest safety gear and armed with the most potent URETEK polymer aimed to stop America’s underground infrastructure from failing.
In addition to URETEK’s advancement in technology, URETEK’s process to alleviate troublesome underground infrastructure is also aimed at keeping commerce running at maximum efficiency. The majority of infrastructure projects that URETEK completes have very minimal lane closures and do not require excavation of the manhole, pipe, or joint that is in need of preservation. URETEK has tested its technology time and time again, and believes the majority of America’s infrastructure can be rehabilitated with expanding polymers, without having to completely replace the manhole or underground drainage, at a cost far less that what was proposed on the Recovery Act in the 2009 stimulus bill.
As URETEK continues to progress as a superior infrastructure repair process and positions itself for the future, they do not want their processes and materials to be viewed as an “overnight success”. URETEK strategically took its time developing this arm of their business. One reason for a slower development process it that URETEK, like many companies who have researched, developed, tested, and successfully delivered a solution, want to keep the quality at a high level and reduce companies that are not qualified or have the right training using polymers from eroding the trust of city engineers who decide to use URETEK. Carefully tested materials and processes that are perfected over time has warranted URETEK to patent its processes and polymers to protect its intellectual properties and preserve the quality in their industry. The historical data from past projects, different reactions in different soils, different underground applications that require certain “tricks of the trade” are invaluable moving forward to produce the best results to produce a consistent, quality service for the municipality.
Over the past decade, URETEK has successfully completed over 85,000 projects worldwide, most of them in the United States. The uses for URETEK continue to build as URETEK expands. The uses include commercial, industrial, residential, railways, roads, bridge approach/departure slabs, manholes, sewer and wastewater, and applications around bulkheads and ports. You may ask “What is the common factor for all these applications?” The common factor is URETEK’s patented stable of expanding polymers. The challenge to develop a controllable, rigid, powerful, eco-friendly polymer to lift concrete and pavement, stabilize weak soil, and stop leaky infrastructure seems like an insurmountable task for even the best of chemists. URETEK, teaming up with the best polymer chemistry team available, developed an expanding polymer that was light in weight, but powerful enough to lift hundreds of tons, through injecting the polymer through a 5/8” probe. Since the invention of URETEK’s flagship polymer, different variations have been developed to target specific applications. For example, the material used for infrastructure applications features a 90% strength cure time in under 5 minutes, with full expansion of the material in less than 3 minutes. This allows the operator, whether sealing a leaking wastewater pipe or stabilizing a manhole, to have ultimate control of the expanded polymer, reducing waste and achieving pinpoint accuracy of the problematic soil strata or joint separation. The hydro-insensitivity of URETEK’s polymers, it’s controllability, and lifting capabilities are the consistent elements that make up the common factor for URETEK applications.
Along with the consistency of URETEK’s polymers, is the knowledge base developed through 20 years of experience. Operators go through in depth training and a longer on the job training than most companies. Many operators on URETEK crews across the country have become experts on using URETEK polymers, with many of them having over 10 years experience. Lifting tons of concrete or sealing a leaky manholes using small injection probes with a powerful polymer requires technique, finesse, and a problem solving mind set.
The magic of URETEK is a combination of two things that cannot be duplicated. First, the experience and knowledge of URETEK operators nationwide. Second, URETEK’s time tested, customized expanding polymer deliver exceptional, consistent results.
United States has an ambitious plan to rehabilitate and preserve our nation’s infrastructure. URETEK’s years of planning, experimenting, and developing a successful track record in the underground infrastructure repair market may have set a date with destiny as cities can no longer turn a deaf ear to our nation’s failing infrastructure.
