In Recognition of Outstanding Design and Construction for Highway 287 Precast Slab Replacement

North of Fort Collins, Colorado

Finalist

For projects constructed in 2000

Instead of the typical slab replacement with pour-in-place concrete, this project used a unique method. The contractor removed three 12-ft.x15-ft. concrete panels and replaced them with precast slabs. The DOT's main goal was to reduce construction time and avoid impacting traffic.

The contractor first injected the road with Uretek foam to stabilize and underseal the adjacent panels. He then saw cut the perimeters of the damaged panels, and removed them. He lifted the precast panels into place and aligned adjacent slabs for a smooth ride. Finally, he installed fiberglass stitches for efficient load transfer.

This first-time project set the stage and refined the methods for this new CPR technique. CDOT has used it once since this first project, and the technique has stirred interest from the FHWA, the concrete paving industry and government agencies.
